Carson Wentz was the belle of the ball last week at the Senior Bowl. The North Dakota State QB was the top quarterback prospect in Mobile last week and did well all week in practice leading up to the game Saturday. Cleveland.com is reporting that Hue Jackson met with Wentz and according to the new Browns coach the meeting went well.
“It’s always hard when you’re sitting in the stands watching these young guys, but he has a lot of the characteristics that you look for. Again, it’s just so early in this process, and until you can really study them and get to know them will you really be able to make a sound judgment.”
Wentz was asked about the meeting and was a little coy but had nice things to say about Jackson.
“He seemed like a really good guy and obviously I’m assuming he’s going to be a really good coach up there in Cleveland, so it went well.”
The Browns will pick second in the draft and will have their choice among all the QBs since the Titans at #1 drafted Marcuc Mariota last year. Tennessee could mess all that up and trade out of the spot with another team that wants to leapfrog Cleveland and get the best QB on the board.
Wentz went 6 of 10 passing for 50 yards and no touchdowns in the Senior Bowl. He was hitting receivers in the hands but they couldn’t make the catch to improve Wentz’s stats. Mississippi State quarterback Dak Precott had the best day of all the QBs in Mobile and likely improved his draft stock.
The next stop for Wentz will be the NFL Combine where he will get a chance to show what he can do in front of NFL scouts, GMs and all the media that will be in Indianapolis next month for the event.
