Jerry Jones hit the motherload with compensatory picks. The NFL announced that Dallas will receive four compensatory picks. One pick in the 4th round (#135) and three in the 6th round (#212, #216 and #217). The Cowboys will be picking 4th in the first round and will be in position to get an elite player who can contribute right away.
The Cowboys will have nine picks in the 2016 NFL Draft overall. They would’ve had eleven but they traded their fifth and seventh round picks for WR Brice Butler and RB Christine Michael respectively.
With the extra picks Dallas will pick at #4, #34, #67, #101, #135, #189, #212, #216 and #217.
The NFL awards the picks for losing key players players in free agency the previous season. I guess Roger Goodell had a soft spot for the 2014 leading rusher DeMarco Murray, who bolted for Philadelphia. Dallas also lost Bruce Carter, Justin Durant, Dwayne Harris, Henry Melton, Jermey Parnell and George Selvie.
The Patriots and 49ers also received four compensatory picks as well. The highest compensatory pick was awarded to the Lions who lost Ndamukong Suh to Miami during free agency.
Compensatory picks cannot be traded this year but starting next season is they can be dealt.
