To be honest, as I write this article, I’m still fuming over the Ravens pick. As long as I can remember, the Baltimore theory for the draft was “In Ozzie we trust”. After all, our greats players were home grown- Ogen, Lewis, Reed, Suggs, and many, many more.
In recent years, Newsome hasn’t done quite so well with picks like Matt Elam, Arthur Brown, and Courtney Upshaw. He’s still a decent drafter, but I don’t think he’s the same guy who made the Ravens competitive for 10 years with ease.
I think the Ravens reached on Ronnie Stanely, but I hope I’m wrong. They could have traded down and gotten a good tackle all the same. But, they chose not to make that move.
Fast forwarding to the second round, the stars aligned and Myles Jack slid all the way down to the Ravens. He’s the perfect replacement for Terrell Suggs, right? Apparently not. The Ravens traded that pick to the Jaguars who selected him. So, Baltimore essentially traded Myles Jack for a 5th round pick.
After missing out on Jack, the Ravens had the perfect chance to draft a pass-rushing defensive lineman named Noah Spence. He was arguably the best pure pass-rusher in the draft. Great pick, I guess. The Ravens decided against that and trade this pick away as well! The Dolphins pick a CB, then Spence gets drafted before the Ravens ever think about getting to the podium again.
Finally, the Ravens decided they were going to make a pick. They wanted a guy who could help the defense now but make an impact for years to come. They settled for an effort player who has a high motor named Kamalei Correa.
Baltimore isn’t making the sexy picks. In their inaugural draft, the Ravens drafted Jonathan Ogden and Ray Lewis. It would have been nice to see them take Laremy Tunsil and Myles Jack to follow the same mold. But, they’re trying to address needs and accrue draft picks.
Ozzie traded took the second tackle on most peoples’ boards because of Tunsil’s last minute drug scare. He took a speed/energy guy over Myles Jack because of his knee injury.
There was a point in time where I knew Ozzie was going to make the right pick, and I would blindly say that he was doing the right thing. But these days, I’m not sure that I agree. Newsome is taking players that are generally considered great players, and hasn’t made an incredible pick in a few years.
That being said, if you’re going to trade picks, why not trade your top pick when you’re that high? As a fan, I’m disgusted by the Ravens’ picks so far. As an analyst, I can understand what they’re trying to do.
For what it’s worth, at this point, the Jaguars have the best draft in my opinion. Getting Ramsey and Jack while getting Fowler back could make their defense one of the best in the league.
