Potential first round pick Ezekiel Elliott turned some heads yesterday when he said he wants to get drafted by the Cowboys. The Ohio State running back made the announcement on NFL Now when asked where he’d like to get drafted.
According to Elliott on where his ideal destination would be,
“The Dallas Cowboys. I want to go play behind that great offensive line they have down in Dallas.”
Usually prospects tend to not name specific teams when asked about where they would like to get drafted. Sometimes a potential draft pick will talk about his favorite team when he was a kid or be politically correct and say something like it would be an honor just to hear his name called.
Elliott has been outspoken about the draft since last year, even irritating former coach Urban Meyer by talking about going to the pros after a heartbreaking loss to Michigan State in late November. So when I heard about Elliott naming a specific team he wanted to get drafted by it didn’t surprise me.
It’s thought that Elliott will be the first running back chosen in the 2016 NFL Draft and he will go in the mid to late first round. Derrick Henry from Alabama will likely be the second back off the board but he is thought to be a second round pick.
Dallas is picking fourth in the draft this year and will likely pick a QB or a defensive lineman. Elliott would do well with the Cowboys and is a good fit but there are better players ahead of him and he isn’t a top need and the value isn’t there at #4. If Jerry Jones were to trade back and acquire more picks Elliott make a lot of sense with an aging Darren McFadden penciled in as the starting running back in 2016.
Elliott will have a chance to improve his draft stock at the NFL Combine later this month but he will have to be off the charts to get Dallas to pick him at #4.
