In front of 5,500 fans on Saturday in Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium, head coach Jeff Brohm’s WKU Hilltoppers put on another offensive show, racking up over 900 yards through the air as the Red team defeated the White team 52-31 in the annual Red vs. White Spring Game.
“I liked today,” Brohm said. “A lot of the guys competed hard, and we found a way to create some big plays. Without question, there is plenty of room to improve. After I look at the film, I’ll be able to look at it specifically and judge it, but I like the way we competed.”
Quarterbacks Drew Eckels and Tyler Ferguson led the way in the air, going 19-of-24 for 322 yards and 17-of-26 for 223 yards, respectively. The two are part of a four-man race to replace All-American Brandon Doughty, and all four quarterbacks gave fans of the Red and White something to be excited about heading into the summer offseason. WKU was 59-of-95 (62.1-percent) for 901 yards through the air on Saturday.
“We made some big plays up the field, which is good, but we had two interceptions so we have to get better on that,” Brohm said of his quarterbacks. “I thought all of them did a few things well like they have all camp. It’s a close race. We’ll have to go back and look at this and evaluate it and see where we’re at.”
A trio of Hilltopper wideouts went over the 100-yard mark as sophomore Will Bush tallied 169 yards on eight catches with a pair of touchdowns to lead the way. Senior Nicholas Norris finished with five catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns, while freshman Lucky Jackson caught seven passes for 138 yards.
Defensively, freshman linebacker Ben Holt had a team-high nine tackles (two solo) as well as a tackle for loss and a 15-yard interception return. Defensive Nick Dawson-Brents was a force behind the line of scrimmage, racking up three quarterback hurries in a scrimmage setting, while Ty’Ron Horton, Kalvin Robinson and Drew Davis each had solo sacks.
