Mississippi State QB Dak Prescott was thought to be a second or third round draft pick next month in the 2016 NFL Draft. After throwing for over 300 yards against LSU and Alabama’s NFL-caliber defenses and holding every passing record at Mississippi State Prescott was considered one of the top ten quarterbacks in this year’s draft class. The Bulldogs QB had a solid showing at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, AL last month and was named Most Outstanding Player.

At the Senior Bowl Prescott was 7 of 10 passing for 61 yards and led the South team to a touchdown in the second quarter. Carson Wentz came into the game with all the hype but at the end of the week there was a buzz about Prescott.

At the NFL Combine Prescott did well in all the drills and finished in the top six for each event. He also did well at his Pro Day in Starkville which had 30 NFL scouts in attendance. Prescott’s draft stock was at an all-time high and there were whispers that he could get picked in the second round. Teams like the Jets and Cowboys were showing a lot of interest and he even had a visit set up with Buffalo. Unfortunately that could have all changed Saturday when was cited for speeding and driving under the influence in Starkville.

The most recent example of a player making bad decisions before the draft happened last year when Missouri’s Shane Ray got popped for smoking weed. Ray was considered a top ten pick after a dominant year at Mizzou but he got was busted smoking marijuana several days before the draft and fell all the way down to #23 to the Broncos who traded up to get him.

Teams like the Cowboys who already had interest in Prescott may now wait and try to get him in the third or fourth rounds after the traffic stop. Character issues are a big thing right now in the NFL. A GM isn’t going to risk wasting a pick on a guy who is screwing up, especially this close to the draft.

Prescott picked a bad time to make a mistake and he will pay the price at the draft. He will still get picked up but it won’t be in the second round. I can see him going in the third or fourth round now. Prescott has a big time arm and is very similar to Donovan McNabb or Cam Newton. He has NFL skills but will have to work on repairing his image that was squeaky-clean this time last week.
