New England released backup defensive back Leonard Johnson earlier this week. Johnson was signed by the Patriots after being released by Tampa in December. Johnson started three games late in the season but did not play in the playoffs despite being active.
Johnson signed with Tampa Bay after the 2012 NFL Draft as an undrafted free agent out of Iowa State. He played in 52 NFL games and started in 20 of them. Johnson has 5 career interceptions with two returned for touchdowns.
The Patriots are pretty thin at cornerback and will likely go after one in the second or third round. New England had to forfeit their first round pick in April’s draft after the deflated football scandal in the 2015 AFC Championship Game.
