Vanderbilt linebacker Stephen Weatherly raised some eyebrows in Nashville when he announced he was forgoing his senior season to enter the NFL Draft last month. Weatherly probably would’ve benefited from another year in Derek Mason’s defense but he did receive an invitation to the NFL Combine. The NFL announced all 332 players who received invitations earlier today.

Weatherly has a good build and did well against the run as well as rushing the passer in the 3-4 last year. At 6’5, 250 pounds the Commodore defender can play defensive end in the 4-3 or as a linebacker in the 3-4 like he did the last two seasons at Vandy. His versatility will help him in the NFL Draft in April.

Last season Weatherly had a huge game against Georgia with eight tackles, two of which were for a loss. He wound up with 46 tackles and 9.5 sacks in his final season in Nashville.

Weatherly is thought to be a day three pick selection at best but will likely be an undrafted free agent. If he can find a team that is thin at linebacker he could choose to sign with them and give himself a good opportunity to make the roster.

Other Commodore standouts Caleb Azubike and Steven Scheu did not receive and invitation to the Combine. Both are thought to be late round daft picks at best, and like Weatherly may have to sign as undrafted free agents to get a shot at the NFL. Scheu was one of the top receivers in the stagnant Vanderbilt offense and Azubike struggled with injuries in his lackluster senior year. Both have potential but will need to find the right spot to flourish.

The NFL Combine will be held in Indianapolis, IN Feb. 23-29.
