So with their first pick of the 2016 NFL draft the Pittsburgh Steelers selected a cornerback as expected, it just wasn’t one of the top tier prospects when they selected Artie Burns of Miami. Burns will not start the season as a starting corner, he may not end the season as a starter either, honestly I don’t think he will see the field except as a special teamer, so I say bust with that pick.

The Steelers will look for either a wide receiver or defensive lineman with their second pick, but the real surprise of the night for the Steelers will be the selection of quarterback Cardale Jones in the third round. The team ins prone to select “potential” back-up quarterback in the mid to late rounds but this could be the pick that gets the most buzz for the whole Steelers draft.

Ben Roethlisberger’s contract does not expire until 2020 so this is not a greatest need pick but one that needs to be addressed. Ben is getting up there in age and years and the injury bug does crop up and you can just tell that the Steelers brain trust of Tomlin and Colbert get a little squirmy when talking about the potential of current back up quarterback Landry Jones.

So let’s discuss Cardale Jones, who is 6’5, 250 lbs which is similar to Roethlisberger, has a strong arm and good feet but not a ton of game experience. This lack of game experience proves very intriguing to NFL teams because they only can see the potential in Jones not the downside. He has proven he can win at a high level but wasn’t even able to win the quarterback completion in college.

A slew of NFL teams are seriously considering taking Jones, based solely on his body and potential, are the Steelers one of them, you bet. I think the Steelers are banking on Jones being on the practice squad his first year, then become a solid backup and when 2021 hits, Jones will hit the field as the next starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

One other note, I would not be surprised to see the Steelers trade up in the third round to get Jones, especially since in the first round they were burned by the Cincinnati Bengals taking Williams Jackson III the pick before they selected. Jackson was who the Steelers wanted, so don’t expect them to stand pat anymore in this draft.
