A day after being cut by the Titans Zach Mettenberger has been claimed by the Chargers. The former Titans’ QB will be reunited with former Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt in San Diego who coached him during his tenure in Tennessee.

The Chargers are rock solid at starting QB with Phillip Rivers. Behind him it is a little fuzzy with Kellen Clemens and Mike Bercovici looking to land the backup gig. Kellen Clemens. Bryn Renner was waived to make room for Mettenberger on the Chargers’ roster.

Mettenberger was a sixth round draft pick from LSU in 2014. He likely would’ve gone higher but character issues and a torn ACL at the end of his senior year dropped his draft stock significantly. During his time in Tennessee Mettenberger had 12 touchdowns, 14 interceptions and a 75.4 passer rating in two seasons. He is 0-10 as a starter but he did play for a team that had the #2 pick in the NFL Draft his first year and the first overall pick in his second season. Not to mention he was sacked 31 times in 14 games so he could still flourish given the right scenario.

Last preseason there was some buzz that Mettenberger could be trade bait for another QB-desperate team like the Bills but Tennessee opted to keep him as the backup to #1 pick Marcus Mariota.

The Titans signed Matt Cassel in March which spelled the end of Mettenberger’s time in Nashville. When the team needed a roster spot for a standout from the rookie mini camp this weekend the former LSU star was expendable. Casell will backup Mariota this year. Alex Tanney was signed last off of the Colts’ practice squad in December. He will likely be the third string QB in 2016.
